Blue John Stone is a very rare and delicate Fluor Spar crystal and semi-precious stone said to be discovered by the Romans 2,000 years ago in the Derbyshire Peak District. Also known as Derbyshire Spar, the deposit is approximately 250 million years old and is the rarest mineral in Britain. The Blue John caverns are open to the public for guided tours in the summer months, and Blue John continues to be mined in small amounts for local crafters to make into jewellery.

In ancient times, the Ruby was considered more valuable than diamonds. Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan is said to have offered a whole city in exchange for a single Ruby. Ancient Hindus offered rubies to the god Krishna in the belief they would be reborn as emperors. In Hindu folklore, the glowing fire within rubies was said to burn so hot that they boiled water, and Greek legend claims that the Ruby’s warmth could melt wax. Today in many cultures the Ruby symbolises love and passion.

In Greek legend, Phaeton, son of a river nymph and the Sun God Apollo, asked to drive his father’s sun chariot. He took an erratic path through the heavens which scorched the earth and created the deserts at the equator. To prevent more damage to the earth Zeus struck him down with a thunderbolt. Phaeton’s river nymph sisters were distraught at this, so the gods took pity and turned them into trees on the bank of their river. They shed tears of amber which were carried away by the river.

Legend has it that Aquamarine is a mermaid’s treasure and Neptune’s sacred jewel. The ancient Greeks believed it captured the true spirit of the sea. Sailors wore aquamarine amulets for protection from the perils of the ocean. In the Middle Ages, Aquamarine crystals and crystal balls were used by healers, sorcerers, prophets and mystics. Today Aquamarine is used in meditation to calm the mind.

In Greek mythology, Amethyst was a young girl who drew the drunken wrath of Greek God Dionysus. Amethyst begged the Goddess Diana for help, who turned the girl into a white, shimmering quartz stone to hide her. Sobered Dionysus felt remorse for his actions, and cried tears that dripped into his wine. His wine overturned, and spilled over the rock, turning it into a purple quartz.
